Vape detectors are specialized air quality sensors that measure and analyze chemical anomalies in the air. They are most commonly used to detect the presence of smoke and vapor from vaping (e-cigarettes, e-cigs, or electronic nicotine delivery systems ENDS). These battery-operated devices vaporize a liquid containing nicotine to produce an aerosol that users inhale. These vapors contain volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals, aldehydes, and tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These pollutants can irritate the respiratory system, lead to lowered cognitive function, and may cause cancer.

The majority of sensor-based vape and vape detectors smoking detectors are triggered by an onboard algorithm that combines multiple onboard sensors into a “Vape Index.” Once the Vape Index is exceeded, it triggers the device to send a silent alarm to a predefined list of individuals or groups tasked with incident response. Unlike traditional smoke and heat detection sensors, vape detectors are designed to be more sensitive to the chemicals in vapor smoke. Most models are tested to identify specific chemicals associated with popular e-cigarette brands and have low false-positive rates.

Typically, vape detectors are installed in school bathrooms and locker rooms to prevent students from using these spaces for vaping and/or bullying activities. They are also ideal for monitoring other sensitive spaces like classrooms and offices where vaping is prohibited or a risk to health. Vape detectors are a turnkey solution that can be implemented quickly and easily to help schools curb this growing problem in their buildings.
