Whether it’s amateur films, homemade music videos, or TuttoYouTube, there’s a lot of variety in the types of videos posted to YouTube. The research component of this study combines two approaches: surveying people who regularly get news on YouTube and using computational tools and trained human coders to analyze the content of videos by the most popular news channels on the site (see Chapter 2 and Methodology for details). For example, in looking at hundreds of videos from the top 100 most popular YouTube news channels, researchers identified whether the tone was primarily positive or negative toward the person or group the video discussed — with negativity being more common among independent channels than those affiliated with a news organization.
